Collective Action Participants, Nonparticipants, and Observers: Media Use and Student Involvement on April 7, 2010 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Abstract: Duriong the presentation, Nora, CASI Visiting Scholar, presented her research on the differences between participants, nonparticipants, and observers during the April 7, 2010 demonstrations in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Data collected via a survey of third- and fourth-year university students in Bishkek suggest that the observers represent a separate group from participants and nonparticipants; these groups can in part be differentiated by their media use. Research methods and some preliminary results from this study were discussed during the semiar as well. 

 
Bio: Nora Webb Williams is a dual Master’s degree candidate in Public Affairs and Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. Her primary research interest is protest mobilization in Bishkek, in particular during the events of April 2010; she intends to conduct a survey to better understand how individuals were motivated to join the collective action. Based out of AUCA, her research is sponsored by a 10-month-long Fulbright grant.
