On April 23, AUCA student Kurmanbaeva Kunduz, Department of Applied Geology, participated in the Olympiad, passed the second round and entered the top 10.
Kunduz enthusiastically shares her own impressions about Olympiad:
- April 23rd is International Water Day. There was Olympiad on Integrated Water Resource Management that day. It lasted for two days: first day – Olympiad, second day – educational excursion for top 10 students. The event organized by Kazakh-German University in association with Global Water Partnership, DAAD, CAY4W, SIE-ISW-SIA, SEE-SWE in Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University in Bishkek.
Olympiad consisted of two parts. The first part was a paper test, second – oral test. Between tests, there were presentations by the representatives of organizations and university students and movie show From Glaciers to the Aral Sea. The winner of both tests will represent young water community of Kyrgyzstan on Regional Olympiad at the end of summer.
The second day of Olympiad started at 10 am, on the 24th of April. First stop was in the edge of Karagach Grove in the Institute of forestry under National Academy of Science for the pilot territory of poplar planting. According to NAS representatives, government grants only 0.09% of the budget for science, while European countries allocate 3-5% of the governmental budget for scientific institutions.
Coordinator of ICRAF program, Dr. Niels Thevs, lectured about their program and showed some soil analysis outside without any lab equipment. According to short fieldwork by drilling 40 cm down, we concluded soil mostly consists of silt.
Also, their current project is aimed to determine what kind of poplar are adaptable for our territory. They have been planting hybrids of various poplar species and observing their behavior. Also, they are preparing kurta (Cynanchum) to plant in the Aral Sea to rehabilitate the dried up areas of the sea. They are trying to cooperate with big textile businesses to implement this idea.
Next stop was in hydrometeorological station “Baityk” in Kashka-Suu village. In the station, we were lectured by Zoya Kretova on how specialists perform meteorological measurements. We learned that the time of measurements in meteorology is extremely important because it is international, intercontinental information that will be used for a weather forecast. We got to know each of the devices measures certain hydro meteorological indicators. It is very sad that such stations in the Kyrgyz Republic are experiencing huge degradation and even though the government is not going to provide financial support.
