On March 11, 2016, students in the Environmental Management and Sustainable Development program (EMSD) visited the Bishkek Water Museum. Students saw old (but still effective) techniques for water management in Kyrgyzstan, renewable technologies related to hydro and solar power, watched a video about water’s properties, and were informed on how to rationally use water resources.
Aziz Aitbaev, one of the students on the trip, spoke to us about his experience:
“The trip to the Water Museum was very exciting. When we arrived, the guide showed us a short movie about the medicinal properties of water before heading inside. I was surprised by how unique the design of the museum was. In short, this museum is filled with lots of exhibitions, interactive desks, a laboratory, and aquariums full of small river critters, all of which would be interesting to children and adults alike. The main purpose of the museum is to inform people about sustainable water usage and efficient irrigation systems (for example, drip irrigation, which is very useful for agriculture). Nowadays this topic is very important for people due to rampant inefficient uses of water, water shortages in rural areas, and water pollution by toxic chemicals and plastics.”
