Attending university can be one of the most stressful and nerve-wracking experiences in a lifetime. Suddenly a student is faced with exams, essays, homework and more. And academic concerns sometimes take a backseat to the ever-present personal issues that seem to be unavoidable on a college campus. All of this compounded with the normal stresses of everyday life can be overwhelming. This is why at the American University of Central Asia we offer professional counseling for students through our Psychological Counseling Services.
Rustam Ismailov serves as the counselor and psychologist for AUCA. A graduate of AUCA, he received his Masters from a London university and operates a private practice here in Bishkek. He told us about the importance of seeking help, “To actually ask for help, it can be difficult. Sometimes in order to ensure your further development: personal, social, and professional, you need a bit of help…I hope students here realize that sometimes you need that help.” And that help is not restricted to issues related to university.
We asked him what kind of problems that students could come to him with, “various problems…some are not debilitating, some of them are more complex,” he explained. Relationship problems, family problems, stress issues, eating disorders, depression: any issue can be discussed in a completely confidential and supportive environment.
Rustam acknowledged that “the moment when you make the choice to take action and ask for help” is the hardest, but also the most important.
