On September 5, 2015, the president of the American University of Central Asia, Andrew Wachtel, gave a talk at the International Academic and Research Symposium “The Legacy of the Epic as a Component of Stable Development during a Time of Societal Change.” Wachtel’s talk was on “‘Manas’ as a Product of the Soviet Union.”
The symposium took place in the Hyatt Regency conference room and the National Academy of the Sciences of Kyrgyzstan over the course of two days, September 4 and 5. Participants of the symposium came from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Germany, and Japan.
The symposium opened with a recitation of Manas by the manaschi, followed by speeches from the Speaker of Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Asylbek Jeenbekov; Prime Minister Temir Sariev; Minister of Culture, Information, and Tourism Altynbek Maksutov; and representatives from the Office of the President of Kyrgyzstan.
