AUCA Starts Recruiting for New Pre-University Academy

February 5, 2012

BISHKEK, January 24, 2012 - The American University of Central Asia (AUCA) is delighted to announce the start of recruitment for the first class of students at the New Generation Academy (NGA).

Students at the NGA will complete a one year rigorous course of study in English, Kyrgyz, Russian, Maths, History and Science oriented toward developing critical thinking.  Building on AUCA’s experience of running its existing Preparatory Program, the NGA will provide students with a foundation to access quality university education.

The NGA is open to applicants from high schools from across the Kyrgyz Republic.  70 full-funded scholarships are available to applicants with strong academic potential who may not have benefited from a full range of teaching in high school and whose families cannot afford high quality education.  Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, room and board as well as academic materials. In addition, for students who successfully complete the NGA program, and who demonstrate financial need, up to 30 fully-funded scholarships for study for four-year degrees at AUCA will be available beginning in 2013 and 2014.

The establishment of the NGA is another important step towards the realization of AUCA’s goal to create opportunities for deserving students from all of the regions of the Kyrgyz Republic regardless of their financial means.

The NGA also admits eligible paying students who do not meet the financial need criteria but otherwise satisfy the application requirements and demonstrate that they would benefit from an additional year of study to better prepare them for post-secondary education.

Recruitment to the NGA, which was established with the support of Mina Corp in June 2011, is through a fair and transparent competition open to all high school students who are completing the 11th grade in the Kyrgyz Republic. The NGA expects to admit seven to eight scholarship students from each region of the country each year and a similar number additionally from Osh and Bishkek.

Commenting, the Director of the NGA, Janat Hetrick said: “The New Generation Academy is a very exciting initiative that is unprecedented in Kyrgyzstan.  We know that there are a lot of high school students across the country with very high academic potential who, in many cases, do not have the level of preparation needed to access high-quality university education.  Studying at the NGA will reinforce their knowledge in key areas and give them the opportunity to aim high and enter a top university.  We strongly encourage these students to apply.”

To be considered for admission and scholarship to the NGA, applicants will need to submit a written application in line with the requirements outlined on the NGA website at http://www.auca.kg/en/nga/.

Each application will be individually reviewed and assessed.

Candidates who pass the initial screening will be required to take a test to measure their proficiency in English and attend an in-person interview with NGA representatives.  AUCA will hold tests and interviews in all the regions of Kyrgyzstan as well as in Bishkek.

The 2012 application process begins on February 1 2012.  The application deadline is April 3 2012. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

The award of places at the NGA for the academic year 2012-2013 will be announced in May 2012.  Classes begin in August 2012.
