MA course is to be opened at the AUCA Department of Psychology in new academic year, which offers an opportunity to receive high quality knowledge and practical skills; moreover it provides students with additional opportunities to show their worth in international professional and academic arena. This program is available for all who wants to continue their education in psychology field.

MA in Applied Psychology offers three topical specializations:

1. MA in Psychological Counseling;
2. MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology;
3. MA in General Psychology

Vecherniy Bishkek talked a little with university representatives and found out requirements for enrollment and advantages of studying at MA in Applied Psychology.

Associate Professor, Doctor Elena Molchanova told us about Department of Psychology in whole and opportunities opening in front of MA graduates.

- Please tell us about the Department and opening of MA course.

- Popularity of profession of “psychologist” grows by leaps and bounds. If earlier this profession was associated with something dangerous, now, in general psychologists are treated kindly. It must be admitted that this is result of 2010 events, when country needed specialists in the mental health field.

It must be noted that our education program meets requirements of both Kyrgyz state and international standards. So, students with bachelor degree can apply to MA courses abroad without difficulty. Now graduates are able to get MA degree in Applied Psychology in Kyrgyz Republic. Within the framework of our MA course, students get high quality education in selected specialization in psychology, moreover, they speak English in professional degree.

 

- What possibilities are opened in front of MA graduates?

- First of all, MA course offers not only best local experts, but also international high quality researchers and consultants. Also AUCA plans to afford to students an opportunity to study one semester in one of USA universities, most likely in Indiana State. MA course graduates will be able to continue their education and to defend doctoral thesis in any university of the world.

It is very seldom when studying MA course abroad has discounts for education. Our overseas colleagues call MA students as “money-makers” – source of income for university. I want to note that tuition fees for MA course in foreign countries are at the average $ 25.000-30.000

- Please tell us about conditions for entering to MA course.

- Passing the English language exam and submitting package of documents are required for entering to MA course. English language exam in AUCA is conducted several times. By the by, we will thoroughly examine recruited group and decide, do we need conduct part of classes in Russian language, or not. In any case, we are able to realize it.

Applicants have to submit followings:

• Filled questionnaire;
• Motivation letter;
• Two recommendation letters;
• CV;
• Copy of diploma;
• Copy of ID/passport;
• # 086 medical form;;
• Four 3x4 photos.

- What caused opening MA course in Psychology?

- The Department of Psychology works in AUCA since its first year of foundation. MA course is to be opened since 2015-2016 academic year. Firstly, now it is just time to graduate psychologists with MA degree, we have enough intellectual as well as organizational resources. Secondly, due to efforts of our president Andrew Wachtel and his team, we are moving to new campus. New place gives new opportunities. I want to note that idea of opening MA course was occurred when we initiate proceedings on organization of the PhD program, which is to be opened in AUCA. To reach this level we need intermediate process between BA and PhD – this is MA course.

- How much do tuition fees for MA course cost?

- Education lasts 2 years. Tuition fees are $5000 per semester. Program offers quite great finance aid for education payments. Entrants have to submit a package of documents and fill the form. We will examine carefully documents of every applicant. There is special formula, which is used for calculations of what discount will be granted one or another student. This formula is transparent, fair and time-proved.

- What is the deadline for document submitting?

- Deadline is 5^th of July. Documents for finance aid are also accepted till this date.

- How many students will study MA course?

- Not more than 25 students. So far we expect 15-17 students for first stream.

- Please tell about advantages of studying in MA course.

- From the point of view of professional practice, diagnostics and consulting, the psychologist with BA degree is not able to do much and has no right for this. Specialist with MA degree is more prepared to work seriously with individuals, children and groups. We want to train Pleiad of psychologists, who will be able to realize many of professional skills legally and professionally, with modern methods, innovations and newest research results in psychology. We have all required conditions and resources to achieve this. Moreover, these facilities become wider year by year.

Recognized international specialists are working in our university and they will share their knowledge with students. Besides that, students will be able to observe processes taking place in institute of consulting and diagnostics under our department.

AUCA is only one university in Kyrgyz Republic with most modern equipment for laboratory researches. In new campus we have high-tech methods for practical consultations, professional trainings and scientific researches.

One more advantage is special process of thesis advising. Theses will be examined by both local and international professors. It means that master’s theses will differ with very high quality level, topicality and they will allow all our students obtain important academic and professional connections. Naturally, it means also that problems like plagiarism will be absolutely ruled out. Furthermore, only within the framework of our program, students will have access to PsycInfo data base. This electronic data base for scientific literature on psychology and related sciences has more than three millions resources and it is known as one of the bests in the world. Of course, we afford ground to publish results of MA research in international academic journals.

- Are provided any preferences for students, holders of AUCA baccalaureate?

- All entrants are equal. AUCA graduates are released from English language test. By the way, it should be noted that candidates with weak English and those who don’t have psychological education can take necessary basic classes prior to academic year.
