March 5, 2015
On March 3rd 2015, the Journalism and Mass Communications department hosted a lecture on the topic “Non-verbal Communications”. The lecture was held by Shyan He, the professor of the Communications course from the Zhejiang University of Sci-technology. The lecture began with the presentation of visual images, namely, a picture of an old woman hugging a small girl with flowers. When asked what the photo shows, students answered unambiguously that it was the picture of a grandmother with her granddaughter showing their love to each other. The other illustration demonstrated a man kneeled, holding flowers, to which the students said that it showed a man making proposal or just going out with his girlfriend.
There were many other examples of visual illustrations describing the existing non-verbal communications. The lecturer from the Zhejiang University of Sci-technology said, that “non-verbal communications are one of the most important aspects in the social life of human being as well as in advertisement and various illustrations. You should be highly familiar with the non-verbal communications’ tips to be able to convey the message to a certain audience visually”.
There was a blast of discussion during the lecture. Students asked questions, listened to the presentation and had discussions on the topic. It came out from the lecture that the main types of the non-verbal communications are gesture, facial expressions, eye contact, body contact and body distance. Lastly, it was concluded from the lecture that the visual illustrations can convey important message to the public. It is just important to know when and how to demonstrate these types of non-verbal communications.
