AUCA President attended the first Central Asian Symposium regarding the Internet

On December 10^th, 2014, AUCA President Andrew Wachtel, Vice President for Finance Talant Sultanov, and Head of Software Engineering Department Almaz Bakenov participated in the first Central Asian Symposium on the Internet, “Prospects of development of the Internet in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

The National Institute for Strategic Studies of the Kyrgyz Republic (NISS KR), InternetSociety (ISOC), the National Center for Information Technologies, and the Central Asian Research and Education Network (CAREN) arranged this event.

It was the first time such a conference was held in Central Asia. Professionals who work with the newest information technologies from European countries and Kyrgyzstan attended the symposium.

 Vice Premier Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Elvira Sarieva, Director of European Regional Bureau of Internet Society Frederick Donk, Director of NISS KR Talant Sultanov, Head of Internet Technologies Department of Internet Society: Global Internet Ecosystem Olaf Calkman, Chief Researcher, Dyn: Regional interaction in Central Asia James Cowie and department heads of ISOC, World Bank, Google staff member Maksat Musaev opened symposium with welcoming speech.

 Siddhartha Raja, a specialist on politics of the World Bank group on Information and Communication Technologies, presented a paper with the topic “Importance of national broadband link” during the “Internet as platform for economic growth” first session.

 After, AUCA President Andrew Wachtel presented a paper with the topic “Development of Curriculum and the Internet”

 He emphasized that Kyrgyzstan still has to do a lot within the internet sector, but the country has great potential.

 AUCA’s President added: “I think it is possible to improve the communication capacity in the country if we think about where it can lead the country, and the government can help in developing the accessibility of the Internet. There are new possibilities like online employment and it makes jobs available for everyone. It is necessary to do everything to make the Kyrgyz youth and all other groups of the population be familiar with the basic principles of internet usage. It is important to have a well-developed infrastructure for the development of the Internet in the country”.
