A “Brain Ring” for free education at AUCA
“In English, what’s a ring that has four right angles?” – This question stumped high school students attending this year’s Brain Ring competition at AUCA.
The annual intellectual competition is a chance for three high school seniors to win free educations at AUCA.
Students from Bishkek Schools #70, #13, #61, #12, #6, #67 and #24, as well as Kara-Balta School #6, took part in this year’s Battle of Wits on April 11.
During the first round, teams representing each school competed to decide who would move on to the individual round of competition. This year, School #70 took first place in the school round, beating the team from Lyceum #13.
During break, the AUCA Student Senate awarded scholarships to several active students from rural regions who have made big contributions to student life at AUCA.
The second half of the competition was for individual students, giving each the chance to get a head start on a bright future at our university. Adinai Dzhekshenova of School #70 took first place.
Students who competed in the individual round were determined based on accumulated points. In total, 12 players were selected, but only three of them could win the grand prize.
Before the competition, future winner Ms. Dzhekshenova tweeted, “Today I’m going to kick all the brains!” She did not disappoint. The “young woman in pink” made good on her boast by dominating the other competitors. When reading the results, event MC “Mr. Host” hinted slyly at the winner with remarks about women being smarter than men. Ms. Dzhekshenova has already passed examinations and now has only to apply and await acceptance.
Aman Kanimetov, of School #61, showed perfect poise while winning second place. Mr. Kanimetov is quite the active student; he has participated in TIFE 2013, and has shown a flair for debate. His second place finish at the Battle of Wits now gives him the chance to attend AUCA for free. Like Ms. Dzhekshenova, Mr. Kanimetov has already passed examinations, and needs only to submit documents for enrollment.
Despite some frazzled nerves, Aidin Karabekov, of Lyceum #13 lyceum was feeling nervous won third place and will also receive a free ride at AUCA. The “young man in black” plays basketball and wants to study in AUCA’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics. Unfortunately, he didn’t pass his mathematics entrance examinations, and must now retake the test.
These three seniors are only a step or two away from enrollment at our university and don’t have to worry about how they or their families will pay for it. We can’t wait to welcome them through our doors next fall. We also hope that they make the most of this amazing opportunity.
Oh and just for your information, the answer to the original riddle “What’s a ring that has four right angles?” is a boxing ring!
