- Tell us please why did you choose AUCA, and why did you enroll as an American Studies major?
AUCA was not my first choice but I can definitely say it was my best choice. Before coming to AUCA I studied in my home country Uzbekistan for one year majoring in English Philology at the Uzbek State World Languages University. While studying there I always thought I could do more than what I was doing. Luckily, by the end of my first academic year I met my distant relative, studying at AUCA, who told me about the university. I realized that AUCA was a good chance to make new friends from different countries and improve my English, and this is why I decided to study at AUCA. I enrolled in American Studies program because I liked the idea of studying about the United States.
- Tell us a little about your department. What new things did you learn there?
I love American Studies Department. I suppose, I am the only student at AUCA who transferred from American Studies to Law and then back again to American Studies. I realized the value of the department for me when I was “outside” and this is why I returned. I believe American Studies is best at enhancing analytical skills and critical thinking. Thanks to American Studies professors, I learned to think differently and express myself freely. Also, gaining knowledge of the US history, society, and politics has broadened my outlook.
- What kind of job you would like to have after graduation?
I would like to do masters and then work in managerial positions at multinational companies. I believe AUCA and American Studies prepared me considerably for my career pursuits.
-Tell us about your favorite class in the department. What is interesting about it?
My favorite one is World Religions taught by Pr. Lance Tillman. The course is interesting, firstly, because Pr. Tillman teaches it in his own manner which is amazing. Secondly, you get a chance to look at the world through special “glasses” and understand the impact of religions on the world events.
-As a senior student, you have to make your honor thesis project. Did you start working on your project? What is it about?
Yes, I did. In brief, I am writing about the reset of US-Uzbekistan relations. I am particularly interested in finding out about rationale and implications of the renewing relations from the US perspective. I believe, this project will allow me to learn more about the US foreign policy towards Central Asia.
-You are one of the outstanding students. Tell us please the secret of your success? How do you manage all research papers, exams, and courses?
I think all the students at AUCA are smart and capable of managing their studies. I believe in saying: “Those who want to succeed will find a way; those who don’t want will find an excuse.” This is how I motivate myself.
- What good advice would you give to students who want to study in the American studies Department?
Firstly, I would recommend them to make a little research on the Internet on what American Studies is about. Secondly, I would advise them to talk to American Studies students and most importantly to professors. I am sure this will help them to make the right decision.
